3 Primary Action Areas

Implementation of European Union directives

The first action area is focused on the application of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives and the promotion of sustainable management of livestock, farming, fishing, hunting, and forestry in the Natura 2000 Network (PNB3

Land stewardship

The second area targets the use of “land stewardship” as a way of working with the species and people living in the same habitat.

International Cooperation

The third and final action area focuses on international cooperation, applying experience in conservation in European and West African countries.

CBD-Habitat Foundation Goals

To contribute to the improvement of the environment and especially endangered species’ status; to foster respect for nature and increased understanding about the environment, improving relationships between humans and their natural habitat; to promote development cooperation; and, ultimately, to foster connectedness between society and the natural world.

  • To recover endangered species, keystone species, and species of interest for the sustainment of essential ecological processes.

  • To develop a biodiversity database. Currently, we have an identification catalogue with more than 200 lynxes and 330 monk seals.

  • To develop and refine innovative and cutting-edge technologies transferable to cultural and human sustainable development.

  • To develop and participate in international cooperation programs.

  • To conserve biodiversity and its cultural and human environment

  • To coordinate the use and exploitation of biodiversity with a focus on its conservation.

  • To research biodiversity functions and, particularly, their ecological processes and the relationships between species and the cultural and human environment.

  • To increase knowledge and understanding regarding the relationships between humans and their natural and cultural environment.

  • To edit publications and informational, technical, and scientific documents.

Guinea-Bissau

CBD-Habitat Foundation began to work on an ecotourism project in Guinea Bissau in 2007. Since then, the Foundation has been collaborating with the Guinean authorities on wildlife conservation and ecotourism development projects.

Conservation of endangered species

Spain and West Africa

The main line of work is the conservation of endangered species and their habitat through development of conservation projects in Spain for species as iconic as the Iberian lynx, the Iberian imperial eagle, the black stork, and the black vulture. In West Africa, the Foundation works to develop conservation projects for species such as the Mediterranean monk seal, gazelle and Sahelo-Saharan antelope, hippopotamus, and African manatee

The Foundation integrates education, information, and awareness campaigns into each one of its projects, which are directed towards the general public as well as the population sectors most closely related to the conservation and development issues addressed by each project.

JAVIER ORIA MARTÍN
PRESIDENT

Forest Engineer. Founder of CBD-Habitat. Expert in interventions for the conservation of the imperial eagle, black vulture, Bonelli’s eagle, Iberian lynx, and other endangered species. He designs strategies and conservation approaches. He is the coordinator of all projects. He designs and develops innovative conservation efforts (habitat improvement designed to increase rabbit population; supplementary feeding; marking and telemetry; management and adaptation of landscapes; surveys). Representative. He supervises each project’s conservation efforts and endangered species monitoring.

JESUS GARZÓN
VICE PRESIDENT

Expert in endangered wildlife; pioneer in the study and conservation of the imperial eagle, Iberian lynx, and capercaillie, among other species. Key promoter of the creation of Monfragüe National Park, he has also participated in the establishment of other protected areas. He was Director of the General Directorate of the Environment for the regional Government of Extremadura (1984–87). Currently, he is committed to biodiversity conservation through the recovery of the transhumance and livestock paths via livestock farming best practices in these ecological corridors.

PALOMA GARZÓN
GENERAL SECRETARIAT

Doctorate in Biology and environmental consultant with extensive experience in the conservation of endangered species. Specialist in the ecology of ungulates, brown bears, and freshwater fish. Connoisseur of the rural environment, she collaborates on the preservation of traditional activities for the conservation of ecosystems and native breeds (herding dogs and Spanish mastiff). She leads information and awareness campaigns for the conservation of endangered species.

DIRECTOR OF PROJECTS IN AFRICA

Oceanographer, Mediterranean monk seal conservation project director. He coordinates projects in Spain, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Guinea Bissau, and other locations. Coordination and management of work teams; technical supervision; tracking, monitoring, and evaluation; liaison with organizations and local communities; activities development; conflict resolution; and management of protected areas.

NURIA EL KHADIR PALOMO
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Biologist. Executive Director. She coordinates projects for the conservation of Mediterranean forest endangered species. Project planning and technical and fiscal oversight. Coordination and supervision of financial reports and audits. Relations with administrations and organizations. Land stewardship management. Information and awareness campaigns. Technical assistance for the coordination of conservation and ecotourism projects. Support for the Administration Department of the Asociación de Fundaciones de Conservación de la Naturaleza (AFN). Coordination and management of work teams, negotiations, and communications.

TECHNICAL TEAM

The majority of technicians are forest engineers, biologists, and environmental and marine science technicians.
